Mom used to press everything. Dungarees, pillow cases, underclothing, you name it – she ironed it. This meant, as a teenager, I pressed all those items too. Monday evening meant standing at the old ironing board, listening to the radio, pressing my father’s tee shirts and my brother’s jeans.
Now I wear Nurses Scrubs and say to heck with all that work!
I adore cotton. And I adore cotton hospital scrubs. Luckily, the new cotton fabrics need a good deal less fuss than cotton garments in my Mom’s household. Now, cotton does not mean just cotton. It means permanent press cotton, or wrinkle proof cotton or wrinkle free polyester cotton blends. It also means hospital scrubs with no noticeable wrinkles. It also means freedom from time spent slouching over the ironing board! Hallelujah!
Modern cotton fabrics, and for me, that spells cotton scrubs fabrics, are designed with a special surface finish to facilitate the scrubs garments reject wrinkles. This is a phenomenal time-saver for dentists who wear scrubs to work every day. Most nursing scrubs uniforms are now wash and wear. You can take those medical scrubs right from your dryer and fold them up, or hang them on a hanger, and you’re good to go! Easy, soft and professional looking hospital scrub uniforms are the standard now.
We know (that some~some} nurses still iron all their hospital uniforms. We know some nurses will never press their nursing uniforms! It’s only a matter of taste, and sometimes, simply a matter of being at the clothes dryer in time to make sure your uniforms remain wrinkle-free, as nature (and the new resin treated cotton scrubs fabrics) intended.
Frequently, I’m nostalgic for the good old days when my Mom had fresh and hot chocolate chip cookies waiting for me when I got home from school. But I sure do not miss those hours at the ironing board. Yes, I do own an ironing board and a modern iron, but they don’t get utilized much these days, thanks to my wrinkle free cotton nurse’s scrubs. Thanks to improvements in the construction of cotton fabrics, Mom’s steam iron doesn’t get much use anymore either. But she puts that time previously wasted in pressing wrinkled cotton garments to good use. She still bakes great cookies.
