When we talk of solar power nowadays, it is electrical power that springs to mind. Electricity is held in batteries called photovoltaics that are recharged by the sun’s rays thru solar panels. There are lots of techniques of using the sun’s power for electric generation and distribution. But are you aware of the fact that solar energy is utilized for plenty of other purposes besides electric power?
Since the days of old, ancient man had learned how to use solar energy for his survival and comfort. The sun’s heat, for example, is used to dry anything that man wants dry. Fish, protein and other foodstuff is dried under the sun for preservation and superior taste. Man also discovered that dry raiment felt good and he had the sun to accomplish the job. And he was thankful for the warmth he felt under the wonderful sun.
As civilisations advanced, so did man’s use of everything inside his “grasp”, including the sun’s energy. He realized how to position buildings to get perfect snug heat indoors. Solar heated water was used for showering in cold climates and seasons. Man also realized to design his dwelling so that maximum sunlight is dispersed inside. It was combined with ventilation architecture and engineering for living comfort. He also found the proper components for these purposes and optimised use of the information, resource and technology then prevailing.
Most or even all of these are still in use today but man has a tendency to make quick fixes and not bother with details such as light and ventilation engineering. He relies on the supply of easy solutions like synthetic electrical lights and air-conditioning. This entails use of more electrical power that when reckoned on the macro scale, adds up to lurching costs we all pay for petroleum-based or carbon-based fuels used by at least eighty percent of power generation in the United States. It may be smaller in other states but still substantially worrying considering that fumes from use of this sort of fuel and its processing / refinement does a lot of damage to our environment.
Use or replenishable energy is man’s best alternative for environment friendly and safe electrical power generation. It is worthy of note that we only use a diminutive share of all of the solar electricity that successfully reaches the earth from that fiery ball far away up there. The sun’s power is a massive resource but isn’t popularly in use as solar electrical power source as it is yet costlier per unit of energy as compared to the prevailing facilities for electrical power generation. The price tag is nevertheless , declining in the light of new technologies and increasing awareness and support to the undertaking by many sectors.
Let us support eco-friendly energy. For our own sake, our children’s and our children’s children’s.
