Eighth Volume of ‘365 Ways To Save The Earth’ Series

As environmentally responsible waste management proffessionals we always trying to reduce the negative impact on the environment by implementing the best practices of proper disposal of waste and recycling.  In the eight issue of ’365 Ways To Save The Earth series we just wante to share a few practical tips  on how each of us can invest in environment protection initiative. 

 

Do not eat turtle meat.

Six of the seven species of sea turtles on the planet are in danger of being wiped out.  Everywhere, they are caught for their meat and shells, their eggs are collected, their laying sites are disturbed, and they suffer from pollution.  In Malaysia, the number of leatherback turtle nests has dropped by 98% since 1950.  About 100,000 green turtles are killed each year in the islands that lie between Australia and Malaysia, and in Indonesia their numbers are a tenth of what they were during the 1940s.  The killing of young adult turtles for their meat is even more damaging because turtles do not reach sexual maturity before the age of about 25.

When you are on vacation, you will see turtle meat on some restaurant menus.  Eating it encourages a trade that threatens to wipe out a species that has been internationally protected since 1990. 

Have your car’s pollution emissions checked.

All new gasoline and diesel cars are fitted with a catalytic converter, which cuts noise and treats the car’s exhaust before it leaves the tailpipe, significantly reducing the pollutants that enter the atmosphere.  This is not enough to stop air pollution, however, because the increase in the number of vehicles on the planet is too overwhelming.  Today there are 800 million vehicles; if present trends continue, by 2050 there will be 2 billion.

It is essential to have your car’s exhaust emissions checked regularly.  Before purchasing a new car, decide whether or not you absolutely need one.  If you live in a city, perhaps it is possible to use public transportation, using your car only when necessary.  Or consider carpooling with a coworker.

Consider a hybrid car.

Hybrid cars combine and electric motor and an internal combustion engine.  They run on electricity in town and use gasoline at highway speed at which point, ingeniously, the batteries are recharged by the movement of the car.  Thanks to this optimized use of energy, hybrid cars offer excellent performance and are much cleaner in town; they produce 75% less pollution than standard vehicles.  Several already on the market are very, very popular.

Hybrid cars are costly at present, but the price will come down when they are produced in large numbers.

How To Be Eco Aware With Responsibly Sourced Office Furniture

In today’s society green is in,   not the color of course, but being  green in an environmentally friendly way. On a domestic level, most of us commit  to doing something good for the environment by recycling our milk cartons, cardboard  and drink  cans. We may  even leave the car in the garage  and dust off our bikes occasionally. It is heartening  to know that our efforts make a difference. Modern homes may be built utilizing  ecologically  friendly products  and furnished with environmentally friendly accessories.  The need for being ‘green’ has now extended to the business world where companies can  choose to use  environmentally friendly office furniture.

Fundamental  requirements of ‘green’ office furniture are that their core  materials come from a sustainable source,  ie that trees are planted to compensate for  those which have been chopped down  for manufacture. Another qualification  would be that the furniture be produced using high levels of recycled or recyclable components, both in the construction materials and in the packaging.  Other stipulations are that the noxious gases CFC and HCFC should not be used in the foam utilized  for office chairs and other seats.  Energy efficient lighting is also a recommendation.

The following five areas tend to be considered when declaring office furniture to be ‘green’:

1) Packing materials -  separately   cartoned  items use more materials than palletized loads.

2) Location of fabrication  – sourcing locally manufactured products saves on energy and exhaust emissions

3) Adhesives and finishes – these should be toxin free  which helps reduce harmful compounds.

4) Renewable materials – using products made from fast growing plants and trees reduces the detrimental effects to  our forests

5) Recycled content – a high percentage is a must

Practically speaking,  eco friendly office furniture looks no different, nor does it perform any differently from the standard variety. Most people would have no idea that your furniture had been of sustainable fabrication  or made from partially recycled materials. With a little application,  companies can move towards making their offices healthy, caring work places, and along with our individual efforts, we can all improve our environment. 

 

 

How to Run a Car on Water and Get More Mpg

If you are one of the many drivers looking for ways to get more MPG from their cars then you have probably heard stories of Hydrogen Fuel Cars and how to run a car on water. These stories may sound like something from a Sci Fi magazine but hydrogen fuel cars are nothing new. In fact not only can you buy hydrogen car kits but there are also several downloadable manuals showing you precisely how to run a car on water.

Like I said, the know how to run a car on water is nothing new and has been around for many years, but due to the present oil crisis it has had a new lease of life. Hydrogen fuel cars (or cars that run on water) are just ordinary cars which are modified with a simple device to turn a small amount of water into HHO gas (sometimes called Browns gas).

This gas does not actually power the engine, but dramatically improves the efficiency of your ordinary fuel by being mixed with it. HHO gas is produced by the process of electrolysis using the current from your cars battery. This gas is then taken into the inlet manifold where it is mixed with your regular fuel and burned in the usual way.

In a normal engine, combustion is not very efficient; this is due to the large size of fuel droplets in the mixture. When HHO gas is added the oversized fuel droplets are split into smaller ones making a much finer mixture. The resulting very fine Hydrogen enhanced fuel burns more efficiently and powerfully, allowing you to get more MPG. This finer fuel mixture is said to be 3 times more powerful than ordinary gasoline.

Very little water is actually used for this process, about a quart of water is sufficient to provide up-to 1800 gallons of HHO gas. This can literally last for months allowing you to get more MPG as well as lowering exhaust emissions. It is also claimed that where Hydrogen fuel cars burn more cleanly they reduce the carbon build up in your engine, so increasing its running life.

There are several Hydrogen car kits available with a price tag of around $200, there are also many downloadable manuals and guides that give you all the information you need to make your own Hydrogen Generator. These step by step guides tell you how to obtain all the parts needed from local garages or Auto stores, and how to put them together easily with just a couple of hours work. This way you are getting the same result as the Hydrogen car kits but a lot cheaper.
