Top Ten Tips For Pro-Bono or Discount Coaching

Find a Life Coach

Life Coaches may from time to time take on a client at zero or low fee. There are a number of good reasons to do this. However, it is important for both parties to feel there is an exchange of value for the relationship to persist and be powerful.

Here are some suggestions for what to ask for, and how to set up for pro-bono or nominal fee life coaching. These should be covered in your intro session i.e. up front.

1) Tell them your regular full fee.
This helps them appreciate the value of the discount they are receiving.

2) Charge something.
Even as low as $100 per month. This increases the client’s perception of the value of the relationship. It also starts a precedent of them paying you – e.g. writing a check or giving credit card details. It’s much easier to ask for your full fee from $100 than it is from zero.

If it’s a good friend and you feel uncomfortable charging, you can have them write the check out to a charity. (But a very powerful coach I’m mentoring is coaching her best friend, both her parents, and they’re all paying her!)

3) Ask the client what they’d be comfortable paying for a trial month.

4) Suggest a bonus payment
e.g. If they reach their goal, get the job etc., they pay the full fee.

5) Suggest they pay the full fee at their option at the end of the month, and only if they love the coaching and want to continue
You can waive this later during negotiation if necessary for them to continue.

6) Bargain for a longer time commitment
When you’re starting out, you do not want a practice client for one month, you want them for 3 months – the longer the better. Remember, money is not as important as your training and experience. It should be very empowering for them to commit to a certain time frame. e.g. “If you’re willing to make a commitment to this, I’ll reduce my fee to $100 per month. That is if you’re willing to commit to 3 months of coaching”. You might even ask for it up front.

7) Ask for referrals
If you are giving them a discount of $200-$500, let them know you expect five referrals during the month from people who would benefit from coaching, and only IF the coaching is going well. OR, tell them at the end of the month, if the coaching was of benefit, you will ask them for referrals to 3 -5 people.

8) Ask for a testimonial
There’s no reason not to get a paragraph from every client. It only takes a couple of minutes for them to email you, and some will be excellent!

9) Set up the expectation of what will happen at the end of the month
e.g.“Let us try this for a month trial. If you are loving the coaching and  getting results, we will continue at my regular fee of $XXX. Fair enough?”. Or, “Because this is a stretch for you financially, let us start you at 50% of my regular fee. Then we’ll increase this by $50 per month, as we increase your ability to pay via the coaching.”

10) Go for a Contra deal
So far I have exchanged coaching for different services e.g. web design, accounting advice, massage, interior decorating, and research assistance. Find out what they could provide in return for the life coaching.

British Gas Welcomes EnergyShare Fund

In a recent announcement on their news blog, British Gas declared their support for an innovative energy sourcing scheme, EnergyShare! This endeavour could ultimately alter the way in which householders and businesses source, use and even produce energy and reduce the amount of money that they expend on it.

To salute this innovative proposal on board, the EnergyShare team are on the lookout for people who are at present looking for community or business electricity and are already in the stages of working to compare energy prices.  They especially want to assist the funding of business enterprises that are  advantageous to the community as well as other community projects. There’s an opening fund of £500K to be invested by the EnergyShare fund!

They are looking at schemes that may assist communities cut their business and home electricity outlay, if you are in the early stages of an organisation to do this or it is up and running already. You must show that you have a passion for assisting your neighbours save energy or promoting the use of renewable energy sources and you will additionally have to prove that you have community support for your project.

Your plan needs to have the ability to compare energy prices from its work with rates that are greater elsewhere. You’ll also need to show that your energy project can make a durable impact on your neighbourhood and will be an inspiration to other organisation who are contemplating making a change when it comes to energy saving!

The British Gas Programme Manager, Claire Osborne, stated:

“We passionately believe that communities and individuals are able to decide how they source, use and even generate energy so we’re incredibly excited to open this first round of funding. We‘re looking forward to hearing how we can support people across the country to make their renewable energy projects a reality”

Perhaps your own village or borough can be like Talybont-on-Usk.  They are the 1st village in Wales to have their own community owned hydro. They trade all the energy produced into the grid to produce revenue that they then spend on community developments. Thus far, they have funded a film screen in their town hall, an electric car share club, and have money-wise sponsored Talybont residents to assess a selection of energy saving methods, which include energy audits, trials of energy meters and an electric bike scheme, that have all helped them in learning about techniques they can have an impact on their energy wastage.

Paying it forward by hugging the world!

Many individuals are familiar with the statement “pay it forward”. The well-known motion picture Pay It Forward starring Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt, released in 2000, demonstrated the concept of paying it forward, wherein philanthropic acts were passed on and on from person to person.

Another thing you can do too, to show love to the world is to hug someone. Hugs are something special to offer and it also propagates love and kindness in the best feasible way. Free hugs have no cost and feel good to give and receive.

There is an organization that understood these two outstanding ideas – free hugs and pay it forward – and decided to create “Hug it Forward”. It is a campaign that promotes people to give hugs around the world to benefit their cause, to give poor children in Guatemala schools they need.

H.U.G. It Forward stands for Humanity Unconditionally Giving It Forward. People only have to pass on a hug and motivate others to give free hugs unconditionally. And for each and every hug that is given, a sponsor in the campaign donates $1 to construct schools in Guatemala. This creates an atmosphere of sharing and giving to other individuals which is a much needed thing in the world today.

Charity goods can also be purchased for individuals who want to do more to assist the campaign move along. You can buy Free Hugs T-shirts and signs with all of the proceeds going to the cause. A new addition to the list is the Hug It Forward bracelet. With the colorful accessory, individuals will surely ask you about the campaign and what it is all about. Give them a hug – and the bracelet along with it – after that tell them to pass it on and HUG IT FORWARD!

It is that simple to be a part of this free hugs campaign. You’ll be paying it forward and helping people with out even spending a cent.
