Enjoy Sailing Tall Ships This Summer

The magnificent tall ship TS Pelican’s 2012 sailing programme continues with a whole range of voyages that make great gap year opportunities.

In May Pelican will be setting sail from Oban in Scotland on a five-day voyage to Belfast and Liverpool.

Pelican will make a brief stopover in Liverpool to allow her to offer a day sail from the port. She will then head for the English Channel and return to her home port of Weymouth in Dorset.

On May 20, Pelican will offer another day sail from Weymouth but don’t worry if you miss it. After a four-day school charter, she will be running another day sail from Weymouth on May 26.

And then comes one of the key highlights of Pelican’s year. On May 27 she will sail for London, arriving on June 2 ready to take her place in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames.

In total, the Pelican will spend a week in the capital. In addition to the June 3 Diamond Jubilee pageant, she has also been booked for a number of corporate sailing events.

The vessel is operated by Dorset charity Adventure Under Sail. She was originally an arctic trawler but was converted into a barquentine to provide sail training for youngsters and tall ship holidays for adults.

Two years ago, Pelican beat 120 other tall ships when one of her crew, Stephanie Chung, won the prestigious Torbay Cup as the most outstanding trainee in the 2010 Tall Ships Races.

Stephanie, 15, of Budmouth College, Weymouth, was the young person ever to have won the award.

Pelican’s Second Officer David ‘Ben’ Swain said: “Stephanie showed the most effort onboard during her leg and shone for someone of her age.

“It’s a great credit to the effort she put in on board and from our side, it’s a reflection of the standard of sail training conducted on Pelican – it’s the first British ‘A’ Class ship to ever win the Torbay Cup.”

What is Solar Energy?

Solar technology can run our house appliances, warm our properties, let us cook amongst numerous other things. Oil and gas that provide most of our present power is essentially limited. As the production cost of manufacturing solar powered systems falls, it’s going to play a much bigger part in our everyday lives.

Nowadays there’s been a significant rise in the use of solar power within our homes. This has come about for a variety of reasons. For householders wishing to minimize escalating energy bills, solar energy has become a practical alternative. Solar panel technology is commonly used in the home for generating electricity and water heating. The most frequent use of solar power is producing electricity, this is known as solar photovoltaic, or solar pv for short. The next frequent use is for making hot water, this is called solar thermal.

Numerous developing countries have a very fast expanding sector in the photovoltaic market. An important natural resource most of these countries have got in abundance is sunlight. A great number of countries have remote communities without any power. The government of these countries consider it as a way to deliver new electric power in these regions. Standard electricity is a thing many of these people would like, renewable energy is free and is cheap once the installing investment is taken care of.

Solar power has fantastic possibilities, but usually came up second best whenever standard fuels are widely available and less costly. Due to general understanding of the damage that can be caused to the ozone layer by fossil fuels, the last 10 years has seen a growing market in renewable technologies. Countries which depend too heavily on fossil fuels could be very vulnerable, as was demonstrated in the US with the oil embargo of 1973 and 1974. From that period testing of numerous pv systems were carried out which led to government and businesses investing in technologies that has resulted in a number of the developments today. Components developed nowadays can produce a large amounts of electricity from sunshine. The cost of solar power panels also have fallen tremendously. Solar powered energy is amongst the energy saving measures which is to be provided using the UK government’s green deal scheme

To qualify for green deal finance, the proposed work has first got to be approved by a green deal surveyor. The work can then be carried out by a green deal provider.

For solar pv to work in a domestic environment, it is required that the house is getting acceptable sunlight. You will need at minimum 6 hours of sunlight for a system to yeild cost effective savings. An inverter is a small box that changes the DC current generated by the solar panels into AC current which is suitable for use within the property. An average inverter will only be able to convert 25% of the power created into electricity. If the system is not producing enough electricity, then the shortfall is taken from the national grid. As a guide, a 4kw system (around 16 panels) can deliver around 40% of the electricity in a typical home. Nearly all domestic systems state they are able to provide as much as 90% capacity for up to 25 years.

Because solar pv panels don’t have any moving parts, they’re literally maintenance free. Most manufactorers provide a 25 year guarantee on their solar pv panels. The inverters life span will be less, but should certainly last around 10 years.

A large number of new goods are on the market that happen to be run by solar, for instance torches which can be recharged through the day and phone battery chargers. Camping out is a pastime which is enjoyed, generally in locations where electric power is missing and can benefit tremendously from solar powered electricity. There are many examples, for instance watches and radios. Even swimming pools could be driven by solar. Anything which usually requires electric power to run can be converted to be operated by solar electricity. The choices are limited only by our imagination.
